Additional Details (1000c):

  • this was one of my first main charcoal pieces – this piece really taught me how to separate light and dark and use high contrast to give depth

Artwork Description: I created this still life to challenge myself to find complexity in familiar objects. I was especially interested in how charcoal could describe contrasting surfaces—the softness of fruit, the shine of glass and metal, and the folds of fabric—using only light and shadow. The wrinkled tablecloth guides the viewer through the composition, while the arrangement evokes a sense of quiet abundance. Through careful observation and experimentation with blending and erasing, I learned to treat highlights as actively as shadows. This piece reflects my patience, attention to detail, and curiosity about how ordinary objects can become visually dramatic.
